Speech recognition experiment in 'natural quiet' background noise

چکیده
Listening abilities in humans have developed in rural environments which are the dominant setting for the vast majority of human evolution. Hence, the natural acoustic constraints present in such ecological soundscapes are important to take into account in order to study human speech. Here, we measured the impact of basic properties of a typical ‘natural quiet’ and non reverberant soundscape on speech recognition. A behavioural experiment was implemented to analyze the intelligibility loss in spoken word lists with variations of Signal-to-Noise Ratio corresponding to different speaker-to-listener distances in a typical low-level natural background noise recorded in a plain dirt open field. To highlight clearly the impact of such noise on recognition in spite of its low level, we contrasted the ‘noise + distance’ condition with a ‘distance only’ condition. The recognition performance for vowels and consonants and for different classes of consonants is

The role of periodicity in perceiving speech in quiet and in background noise.
The ability of normal-hearing listeners to perceive sentences in quiet and in background noise was investigated in a variety of conditions mixing the presence and absence of periodicity (i.e., voicing) in both target and masker. Experiment 1 showed that in quiet, aperiodic noise-vocoded speech and speech with a natural amount of periodicity were equally intelligible, while fully periodic speech...
متن کاملEffects of forensically-realistic facial concealment on auditory-visual consonant recognition in quiet and noise conditions
The study presented in this paper investigates auditory-only and auditory-visual (AV) consonant recognition where the talker’s face is obscured by various types of face-concealing garments and headgear. Observers’ consonant identification performance across the various ‘facewear’ conditions was tested both in quiet listening conditions (Experiment 1), and when the speech stimuli were embedd...
متن کاملThe role of F0 variation in the intelligibility of Mandarin sentences
This study tested the importance of F0 variation for tone language comprehension. The intelligibility of Mandarin sentences with natural F0 contours was compared to the intelligibility of monotone (flat-F0) sentences created via speech resynthesis. In a quiet background, flat-F0 speech was just as intelligible as natural speech (about 94% intelligible), highlighting the robustness of the langua...
متن کاملPreferred Compression Threshold and Release Time in Quiet and Noisy Conditions for Elderly Korean Hearing Aid Users
BACKGROUND AND OBJECTIVES Listeners with sensorineural hearing loss want to compensate for their narrow dynamic range from appropriate compression functions of hearing aids. The present study aimed to determine which compression threshold and release time of nonlinear hearing aids might affect speech recognition and speech quality judgments. SUBJECTS AND METHODS Ten elderly listeners with sym...
متن کاملSpeech signals used to evaluate functional status of the auditory system.
This review presents a brief history of the evolution of speech audiometry from the 1800s to present day. The two-component aspect of hearing loss (audibility and distortion), which was formalized into a framework in past literature, is presented in the context of speech recognition. The differences between speech recognition in quiet and in background noise are discussed as they relate to list...
